My Top 5 (Measurable) Goals for 2017
Happy New Year, y’all!
I’m so excited to share my top New Year’s goals today on the blog. This is the first time I’ve ever publicly shared my resolutions and *fingers crossed* it will help keep me accountable throughout the year.
This year, I took each of my goals one step further and put a measurable number on them. I’m super guilty of just saying I need to do “this” more, or I need to improve “that,” without actually giving myself something solid to work toward. I’m hoping that a trackable end result will make these goals a little more attainable!
Before I get started, I wanted to share something with you guys that I think you’ll enjoy – my New Year’s Resolution Cheat Sheets!
I know I’m much more likely to stick with a goal if I have a visual way to track it, and I’m guessing most of you are too. So, I created these (super cute!) cheat sheets to help us track our progress all year long. Bonus: there are daily, weekly, and monthly versions for any type of goal you’ve set!
Okay, here we go...
1. Exercise 3 times per week.
Let’s get this one out of the way first because it’s at the top of everyone’s list: I really, really need to exercise more. Not just for the physical benefits – those never hurt of course – but also for my mental health!
When I’m not exercising, it’s far too easy to fall into a self-esteem slump. The body image issues creep in, and I’m just so tough on myself. A 30 minute walk with Memphis or a solid workout at the gym can totally turn that thinking around, and I love that it also gives me time to think, plan, and decompress while I’m exercising. It’s a win-win during and after the workout.
Goal: Be active for at least 30 minutes per day, 3 times per week. It’s more than feasible, and I know it will lead to a happier mental state!
2. Publish 2 blog posts per week.
This is one of my biggest goals for 2017! When I blogged for Weddingbee I was knocking out 3-4 lengthy posts per week. I’d love to get back to blogging regularly, and sharing at least two blog posts per week is totally doable.
Goal: Publish at least 2 blog posts per week. I have a mile-long list of ideas—some already photographed and being written—and it’s time to be more diligent about my publishing schedule.
3. Read 12 books.
I lost the habit of reading for fun during college, and reading a book or two on vacation just isn’t cutting it anymore! I have a big stack of books I’ve been waiting to read, and a list of recommendations that’s even longer. It’s time to get back in the habit, and maybe even share a few book reviews while I’m at it.
(Side note: first up on my list is Big Little Lies. Have you guys read it? Ryan got it for me for Christmas so I could read it before the HBO series came on. I’m already a few pages in and I can’t put it down!)
Goal: Read one new book per month. Short and sweet!
4. Travel to 3 new places.
Traveling was a big part of our 2016, and I can only hope 2017 is no different. We already have a trip planned for October, and possibly some long weekends here and there, but the most significant part of this goal for me is the “new” places.
When it comes to traveling, especially the weekend trips, we have a tendency to head back to our same old getaway spots. This year, I’d really love to explore a few new locations and focus on more trips where Memphis can tag along!
Goal: Visit 3 new places this year – bonus points if they’re dog-friendly and Memphis gets to join!
5. Cook dinner 4 times per week.
I saved this goal for the end because it might be the toughest for me. When I’m on my game, meal planning, grocery shopping, and cooking four dinners per week is no problem. However, when I get in a cooking “slump,” and we start eating out way more than we should… it’s tough to get back on track.
I’m working on compiling my favorite weeknight dinners to share with you guys, and I think having them all in the same place will really help. In the meantime, I’d love to hear your favorite meal to cook during the week!
Also, this will probably be the goal where I rely most heavily on my New Year’s Resolution Tracker. If you haven’t downloaded those cheat sheets you can grab them at the bottom of this post.
Goal: Try my absolute hardest to cook 4 dinners at home every week. It’s gonna be a tough one, y’all.
Bonus: Say “thank you” instead of “I’m sorry.”
I know this goal isn’t measurable, but I’m documenting it here to keep myself accountable. I saw this screenshot on Facebook recently, and it really struck a chord:
I’m definitely guilty of overusing “I’m sorry.” And while there are obviously situations where an apology is in order, most of the time a “thank you” is even better.
I love the idea of replacing negativity with gratitude, and I can only imagine how it will improve my own thinking as well.
Well, that’s it for my list, but I’d love to hear your top goals for the new year!
Share them below so we can all help keep each other accountable. Once they’re public we have to be successful, right? Isn’t that how this works!? ;)
